As temperatures drop, seasonal illnesses are on the rise. Our region is currently seeing an increase in flu, COVID-19, and other respiratory and stomach viruses, making it more important than ever to take proactive steps to protect yourself and those around you.
At Haskell Memorial Hospital, we are committed to keeping our community healthy. Here’s what you need to know about preventing the spread of illness and when to seek medical care.
How to Protect Yourself and Others
✔ Wash Your Hands Regularly – Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, and after coughing or sneezing. If soap and water aren’t available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
✔ Cover Your Coughs and Sneezes – Use a tissue or your elbow to prevent the spread of germs through the air and on surfaces.
✔ Stay Home If You’re Sick – Rest is essential for recovery and prevents spreading illness to coworkers, classmates, and others.
✔ Disinfect High-Touch Surfaces – Regularly clean doorknobs, light switches, phones, and other frequently used items.
✔ Stay Up to Date on Vaccinations – Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are effective ways to reduce severity and prevent serious illness. If you haven’t received your annual flu shot or the latest COVID-19 booster, schedule one today.
✔ Practice Food Safety – Stomach viruses often spread through contaminated food and surfaces. Wash hands before preparing food, avoid sharing utensils, and disinfect surfaces after handling food.
Know When to Seek Medical Care
While most cases of flu, COVID, and stomach viruses can be managed at home with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications, some symptoms require medical attention.
Contact a provider if you or a loved one experience:
- High fever (over 102°F) that doesn’t respond to medication
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Severe dehydration (dry mouth, dizziness, little to no urination)
- Persistent vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than 48 hours
- Worsening symptoms after initial improvement
Our providers at Haskell Memorial Hospital and Rural Health Clinic are here to help. If you need testing, treatment, or medical advice, don’t hesitate to reach out.
