Finding advanced specialty care close to home can be a challenge. For families like Vee Adams’ and her mother, however, Haskell Memorial Hospital has been a critical resource, especially for respiratory therapy.
This past summer, Vee Adams’ mother faced a health crisis that required extensive respiratory therapy. What started as a UTI rapidly escalated into a life-threatening situation complicated by end-stage COPD and chronic heart failure. Over the course of several ER trips, her condition worsened until the decision was made to admit her to Haskell Memorial Hospital.
“I was amazed at the level of care,” Adams shared. “Once they admitted us, they just kept at it. They worked so hard to save my mother, and it was intense, supportive treatment — like ICU-level care. Even though there’s not an ICU there, it felt like that.”
A key component of her mother’s recovery was the use of a specialized respiratory machine to help her breathe.
“That machine saved her. I was kind of amazed that they had that machine,” Adams described.
Through the expertise and determination of Haskell Memorial’s team, Adams’ mother not only stabilized but began to recover. After weeks of intensive treatment, she transitioned to swing bed care and physical therapy, marking a significant milestone in her journey.
The Adams’ experience at Haskell Memorial Hospital combined advanced treatment options with a personal, family-centered approach. For patients like Vee Adams’ mother, this combination made all the difference.
“By the time we’d been there for a month, we felt like we were treated like family. I don’t think you’d get that kind of care in a larger facility,” said Adams. “They made us feel seen and valued.”
