Recovery Looks Different for Everyone: How Physical Therapy Helps You Move Forward

Recovery rarely follows exactly the same path for two people.

One patient may be rebuilding strength after surgery. Another may be recovering after a hospital stay. Someone else may need help managing pain, returning to a sport, or improving movement affected by an orthopedic or neurological condition.

That is why physical therapy works best when it is built around the individual.

“Recovery is personal. Two patients can come to us with the same diagnosis and have completely different goals, so we look at what each person needs to be able to do safely and confidently in their everyday life. Sometimes progress is getting back to work or a favorite activity, and sometimes it’s simply being able to walk farther or move with less pain. Those individual milestones are what we build therapy around,” said Manager of Outpatient Therapy Seth Robinson, LPTA, Haskell Memorial Hospital.

During National Physical Therapy Month, Haskell Memorial Hospital is recognizing the role its physical therapy team plays in helping patients regain strength, mobility, independence, and confidence close to home.

Hear from one of our patients about the impact local, high-quality physical therapy had on her recovery:

A Plan Built Around the Patient

Haskell Memorial Hospital’s physical therapy team uses individualized, evidence-based treatment plans for both inpatient and outpatient patients. The goal is to help each person become as independent, strong, and comfortable as possible while working toward the activities that are important to them.

Haskell Memorial Hospital’s physical therapy team uses methods that may include guided exercises, manual stretching, soft-tissue mobilization, cupping, and dry needling. Therapy is available for orthopedic and neuromuscular injuries or limitations, sports injuries, pain management, and other rehabilitation needs.

Physical Therapy Throughout Recovery

For some patients, physical therapy begins while they are still in the hospital. Haskell Memorial Hospital provides inpatient physical therapy for hospitalized patients who need rehabilitation as part of their recovery. Physical therapy is also an important component of Haskell Memorial Hospital’s Swing Bed Program for patients who no longer require acute hospital care but are not yet ready to safely return home.

Through swing bed rehabilitation, patients recovering from an illness, injury, surgery, or stroke can continue working on strength and function before making the transition home.

For others, outpatient physical therapy provides ongoing support after surgery, injury, or conditions that affect mobility, strength, or comfort.

Having these options available locally helps patients continue their recovery without making repeated trips outside the community for therapy.

National Physical Therapy Month is an opportunity to recognize not only physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, but also the patients who put in the work required to make progress.

If pain, weakness, injury, surgery, illness, or another condition is making everyday movement more difficult, physical therapy may be able to help. To learn more about Physical Therapy at Haskell Memorial Hospital or schedule an appointment, call 940-228-0976.
